Judge David W. Evans - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. David W. Evans (Ret.) served as a justice for the 5th District Court of Appeals in Dallas County, Texas. Evans was appointed to the bench by Governor Greg Abbott on November 1, 2019. He resigned at the conclusion of his term on December 31, 2020.

Evans earned a B.A. in philosophy and Greek from the University of Connecticut in 1977. Then, in 1984, he completed a J.D. at Southern Methodist University, Dedman School of Law. As a law student, Evans was editor-in-chief of the Journal of Air Law & Commerce.

After graduating from law school, Evans entered into private practice, joining Haynes and Boone as an associate in 1984. Three years later, he left the firm and started his own private practice as a sole practitioner. He worked in that capacity until 1994.

Evans began his judicial career as a judge of Dallas County Court at Law No. 1 in 1995. Three years later, he was elevated to the 193rd District Court. During his seven-year tenure there, he served as the Local Administrative District Judge of Dallas County (2004, 2005, and 2006) as well as the Presiding Judge of the Civil District Courts of Dallas County (2003).

In 2007, Evans returned to private practice. He became of counsel in the Law Office of Stephen Malouf. Then, in 2010, he founded the Law Office of David Evans, where he practiced until 2012. At that time, he performed his first stint as a justice for the 5th District Court of Appeals. He presided in that capacity for four years before returning to the Dallas County District Court (95th) in 2019.

His memberships have included the Texas Supreme Court Task Force on Jury Assembly and Administration, the Dallas County Juvenile Board, the Dallas County Juvenile Justice Charter School Board, the Texas Bar Foundation, the Dallas Bar Foundation, and the Dallas Bar Association.

Evans is a recipient of the Hero Award from the American Board of Trial Advocates (2019), the Resolution Supporting Living Organ Donations from the Dallas County Commissioners Court (2019), the Trial Judge of the Year Award from the American Board of Trial Advocates (2005), and the Outstanding Judicial Pro Bono Services Award from the Dallas Bar Association (2002).

He is registered as a Republican.
