Judge Denise L. Sher - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Denise L. Sher is an acting justice for the Nassau County Supreme Court in the Tenth Judicial District of New York. Sher was initially elected to the Nassau County District Court in 1995. Six years later, she was elected to serve as the President of the Board of Judges of the Nassau County District Court. Then, in 2006, she was appointed to the New York State Court of Claims by former Governor George Pataki. She then became an acting justice of the Nassau County Supreme Court in 2006, after she was appointed by Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman.

Sher earned a B.A. in psychology from Queens College in 1975. She then completed a J.D. at Hofstra University School of Law in 1978.

She began her legal career as an attorney with the Mental Hygiene Legal Service of the Appellate Division of the New York State Unified Court System in 1979. The following year, she joined the Town of Hempstead as its town attorney. During part of her tenure there, she also worked as an attorney in private practice from 1990 to 1994.

Sher has served as a trustee of the Family and Children’s Association, the Friedberg Jewish Community Center, the Judges and Lawyers Chapter of the Yashar Hadassah, and the Jewish Lawyers Association of Nassau County. She was also president of the Theodore Roosevelt Inn of Court.

Her other memberships have included the New York State Family Violence Task Force, the New York State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Columbian Lawyers Association, the New York State Judicial Committee on Women in the Courts, the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, the Nassau-Suffolk Trial Lawyers Association, the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association, the Nassau County Courthouse Kiwanis, and the National Association of Women Judges.

Her husband has worked as a managing partner for John Hancock Financial Network.
