Judge Dick Ambrose - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Dick Ambrose is a judge for the General Division of the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. He was initially appointed to the bench by former Governor Bob Taft in June 2004.

Over the course of his judicial career, Ambrose has been involved with the Court’s Fugitive Safe Surrender Program.

Ambrose earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Virginia in 1975. He spent the next several years playing professional football as a middle linebacker and defensive signal caller for the Cleveland Browns. Then, in 1987, he completed a J.D. at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.

After graduating from law school, Ambrose entered into private practice, specializing in business litigation and employment law. He worked as a trial attorney for seventeen years, practicing with McDonald Hopkins (1987 to 1996), Nischwitz, Pembridge & Chriszt Co. (1996 to 2004), and Nicola, Gudbranson & Cooper (2004).

His memberships have included the Cleveland Bar Association and the Ohio Bar Association. He also sat on the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Probation Committee, the Cuyahoga County Community Corrections Board, and the Board of Trustees of S.A.W., Inc.

Born and raised in New Rochelle, New York, Ambrose attended Iona Preparatory School, where he was nicknamed ‘Duck’. He has been a resident of Cleveland’s West Side since 1975. When not presiding over legal matters, he has coached youth basketball and softball, and he has volunteered time as an assistant high school football coach.
