Judge Elizabeth V. Cutter - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Elizabeth V. Cutter (Ret.) was a judge for the 4th Judicial District Court of Minnesota in Hennepin County. She was elected to the bench in 2012. Cutter retired on March 4, 2022, and assumed senior status in June of that same year.

Over the course of her judicial career, she held assignments in the Family and Probate/Mental Health Divisions.

Prior to her election, Cutter was a senior assistant county attorney in Hennepin County (2005 to 2012). She began with the office as an assistant county attorney in 1998. Before that, Cutter served for seven years as a special assistant attorney general (1980 to 1987).

She received a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Minnesota in 1974. Cutter went on to complete a J.D. at William Mitchell College of Law (1980) and an M.A. in philosophy at the University of Minnesota (1992).

Her memberships have included the Minnesota Women Lawyers (past president and Board of Directors), the American Bar Association, the Minnesota State Bar Association, and the Hennepin County Bar Association.

Cutter sat as a member of the Bar Association District Ethics Committee for Hennepin and Ramsey Counties, the Hennepin County Bar Association Nominating Committee, the Family Violence Coordinating Council, the Domestic Violence Steering Committee, and Fatality Review Team.

She has also been involved with the Interact Center for the Arts, the Minnesota Comprehensive Health Association, Minnesota Swimming, and the Minnesota State Institutional Review Board.

Cutter served as a mock trial judge and coach for the Minnesota State Bar Association and a McGee Moot Court judge.

She was named Minnesota Lawyer Attorney of the Year in 2011.
