Biography

The Hon. Helal A. Farhat is a judge for the Third Circuit Court in Michigan. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on March 28, 2019, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Vonda Evans.

Farhat earned a bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University in 1999. He then completed a J.D. at Wayne State University Law School in 2002.

After graduating from law school, Farhat entered into private practice, working as an attorney at Farhat & Associates in Dearborn. He specialized in business litigation, criminal law, and immigration matters. Farhat supplemented his practice with service as a magistrate for the 19th District Court of Michigan (2009 to 2011).

His memberships have included the Arab American Political Action Committee, Leaders Advancing and Helping Communities (president), the Dearborn Bar Association (president), and BRIDGES. He has also been involved with the Board of Directors of the Arab American Civil Rights League and the Board of the Safe Substance Abuse Coalition.

Born in South Lebanon, Farhat immigrated to the United States with his family in 1988. The youngest of ten children, he attended Fordson High School, graduating in 1995. Farhat was a resident of Dearborn, Michigan, at the time of his appointment. He and his wife, Sahar, have three daughters.
