The Hon. Herbert B. Dixon, Jr. (Ret.) is a senior associate judge for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Dixon was appointed to the bench by former President Ronald Reagan in 1985 and reappointed by former President Bill Clinton in 2000. He assumed senior status on April 28, 2015.
Over the course of his judicial career, Dixon held assignments as the presiding judge of the Civil Division and the Multi-Door Dispute Resolution Division. He also co-chaired the Strategic Planning Leadership Council for the District of Columbia Courts, and he chaired the Superior Court’s Electronic Filing Pilot Project.
Dixon earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Howard University. He then completed a J.D. at Georgetown University Law Center.
His memberships have included the American Bar Association, the Washington Bar Association, and the National Conference of State Trial Judges. He has also been involved with the Board of Directors of the National Courts and Sciences Institute.
He is a recipient of the Pursuit of Justice Award from the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association, the Judicial Honoree of the Year from the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, and the William R. McMahon Award from the National Conference of Specialized Court Judges.
Dixon and his wife, Phoebe Boykins Dixon, have two adult children, both of whom have doctorates in engineering.
