Judge Holly W. Veal - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Holly W. Veal is a judge for the Henry County Superior Court in Georgia. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Nathan Deal in 2018.

Veal, who was later elected to the seat, holds the distinction of being the first African American to be elected judge in Henry County. She was also the first woman to serve on the court.

Prior to her appointment, Veal had presided briefly as a part-time judge for the Henry County Magistrate Court (2018).

Before that, she spent six years as the owner of her own private practice, The Veal Law Firm, P.C. (2012 to 2018).

Over the course of her legal career, Veal also served as an assistant public defender and an assistant district attorney and senior assistant district attorney as well as a senior assistant solicitor with the Henry County Solicitor General’s Office (2008 to 2012).

As a former prosecutor and defense attorney, Veal has argued before the Georgia Supreme Court.

She received a B.A. in political science from Georgia State University. Veal went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law (2004) and an M.B.A. from Georgia State University (2010).

While attending university, she served as a teacher's assistant with CLEO, Inc. and also worked with the Pennsylvania Board of Education. While a law student, Veal was a staff member on the Journal of Law, Technology and Policy.

She has served on the State Bar of Georgia’s Formal Advisory Opinion Board and was a member of the Board of Directors for the Hands of Hope Clinic. In 2021, Governor Brian Kemp appointed Veal to serve as a member of the Judicial Nominating Commission.

She was recognized for her work as chair of the Debra Blum Mental Health Committee by the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense.

Originally from Wismar, Linden, Veal immigrated from Guyana to New York in 1995. Growing up, her father, Hugh Wilkinson, was an engineer, and her mother, Minerva, was a nurse. Veal and her husband, Lindsey Veal, Jr., have two daughters.

She has drawn inspiration from a Henry Wadsworth quote her mother would recite to her “The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.”
