Biography

The Hon. Irene A. Luna is a judge for the Fresno County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Gavin Newsom on December 13, 2021, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. W. Kent Hamlin.

Prior to her appointment, Luna worked as the Assistant Chief Defense Attorney at Fitzgerald, Alvarez, Ciummo & Associates in San Benito (2021) and Fresno (2014 to 2021). During that time, she represented indigent clients in criminal defense matters. Before that, she was an associate at the Carty Law Office (2013 to 2014).

Luna earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and organizational sociology from the University of California, Davis. She then completed a J.D. at San Joaquin College of Law in 2006.

After graduating from law school, Luna entered into private practice alongside her father, Frank Ramirez. She worked in that capacity for five years, specializing in personal injury matters. Then, in 2011, she became a partner at the Ramírez and Ramírez Law Offices, supplementing her practice with service as an extra-help defense attorney for the Fresno County Public Defender’s Office.

Born and raised in Fresno, California, Luna attended Bullard High School. Her father picked figs alongside his parents in Fresno, who eventually saved enough money to purchase their own farmland. She was a resident of Monterey, California, at the time of her appointment.

She is registered as a Democrat.
