Biography

The Hon. J. Elizabeth Cremens (Ret.) served as an associate justice for the Woburn District Court in Massachusetts. Cremens was appointed to the bench by former Governor Deval Patrick on May 26, 2010, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Phyllis J. Broker. She retired in 2017.


Over the course of her judicial career, Cremens held assignments across Region Four of the Massachusetts District Court. Region Four encompasses Ayer, Concord, Framingham, Natick, Lawrence, Lowell, Newton, Waltham, and Woburn.


Cremens earned a bachelor’s degree from Manhattanville College in 1969. She then completed a J.D. at Boston College Law School in 1974.


After graduating from law school, Cremens began her legal career as a staff attorney for the Massachusetts Defenders Committee (now the Committee for Public Counsel Services). She spent seven years representing low-income criminal defendants before entering into private practice in 1982. While in private practice, Cremens handled criminal, civil, probate, and domestic relations matters.


Her memberships have included the Medford Human Rights Commission. She also briefly served as legal counsel for the Massachusetts State Senate Committee on Criminal Justice (1982 to 1983).


Cremens was a resident of Medford at the time of her appointment.
