Judge James F. Iwasko - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. James F. Iwasko (Ret.) served as a judge for the Santa Barbara County Superior Court in California. Iwasko was appointed to the bench by former Governor Gray Davis in 2002, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Eugene Huseman. He retired in 2014.

Iwasko earned a bachelor’s degree from Woodbury College. He then completed a J.D. at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1970.

After graduating from law school, Iwasko entered into private practice, where he handled family law, civil litigation, personal injury cases, business disputes, and criminal cases. He worked in that capacity until 1997, at which time he was selected to serve as a family court commissioner for the Santa Barbara Superior Court.

His memberships have included the California Judges Association, the Santa Barbara County Bar Association, and the Northern Santa Barbara County Bar Association.

He lived in Los Olivos at the time of his appointment to the bench. His son has served with the Guadalupe Police Department, while his daughter has worked with an accounting firm in San Francisco.

When not presiding over the bench, Iwasko is known for his cooking skills, particularly his barbecued pizza.
