Judge James P. Salyer: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Hon. James P. Salyer is a judge for the Vinton County Court of Common Pleas (General and Domestic Relations Division) in Ohio. He was appointed to the seat by Governor Mike DeWine in March 2020 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Jeffery Simmons (Ret.).

At the time of his appointment, Salyer was a judge for the Vinton County Court, a position he had held since 2002.

His legal career also included practicing as an attorney in the law firm of Sayler & Griffith and working as special counsel to the Attorney General of the State of Ohio and legal counsel for the Village of McArthur. At the firm, Sayler handled appellate law, banking law, collections, contracts, domestic relations, employment law, estate planning, personal injury, real estate law, and wills and trusts matters.

He received a B.A. in national security policy studies from the Ohio State University in 1991. Salyer went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Dayton School of Law in 1994.

He served as a Captain in the United States Army Reserve from 1995 to 2001.

Salyer held memberships with the Ohio State Bar Association and the Ohio Municipal/County Judges Association.
