Judge James T. Walther - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. James T. Walther is a judge for the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas (Probate Division) in Ohio. He was elected to the bench in November 2008.

During his judicial tenure, Walther has presided over the Lorain County Veterans Treatment Court since 2014.

He received a B.B.A. in economics from Cleveland State University in 1984. Walther went on to complete a J.D. at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1987.

Prior to his election, he had practiced as a sole practitioner at his own private practice, James T. Walther Co., LPA, since 1987. During that time, he handled personal injury, contract, family, sexual harassment, litigation, probate, and employment law matters.

In addition to his solo practice, Walther served as an assistant law director and prosecutor for the City of Lorain (2005 to 2008), an acting judge and magistrate for the Lorain Municipal Court (2001 to 2004), and a staff attorney for the Hon. Edward M. Zaleski with the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas (1989 to 2000).

Walther was a past board member of the LCADA Judicial Advisory Board.

His civic involvement included the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 409 (assistant scoutmaster), Friends of Scouting, Greater Frontier District (chairman), Lorain Youth Baseball, Knights of Columbus, Lorain County Port Authority (member), Port Foundation of Lorain (member), Lorain-Medina Community Based Correctional Facility (Governance Board), Yellowstone Association, Friends of Metroparks, Relay for Life (American Cancer Society), Open Door Christian School (volunteer), Hopewood Retreat Ministries, Inc. (Board of Directors), Sons of Amvets, Post 47 (member), Coalition for Hispanic/Latino Issues and Progress (C.H.I.P.S.), and the Avon Democratic Club (associate member).

Walther graduated from Brookside High School.

He and his wife, Dawn, have three children. His father, Thomas C. Walther, is a retired Sheffield Lake Chief of Police. When not on the bench, he enjoys spending time outdoors.

Walther is registered as a Democrat.
