Biography

The Hon. James W. Coffey is First Justice of the Dorchester Division of the Boston Municipal Court in Massachusetts. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jane Swift in 2001.


Coffey earned a bachelor’s degree from Boston College. He then completed a J.D. at New England School of Law.


After graduating from law school, Coffey began his legal career as a court coordinator at the Boston Municipal Court for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office in 1984. He served in that capacity until 1987, at which time he became an assistant district attorney for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. During his tenure there, he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming Chief Assistant District Attorney for the Senior Trial Division in 1998.


He has taught in the Criminal Justice Department at Curry College.
