Judge Jan R. Jurden - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Jan R. Jurden is a judge for the New Castle County Superior Court in Delaware. Jurden was appointed to the bench by former Governor Ruth Ann Minner in May 2001. She was subsequently elevated to President Judge of the Superior Court by former Governor Jack Markell on January 13, 2015, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. James Vaughn, Jr. to the Delaware Supreme Court. At the time of her appointment, Jurden became the first female president of the Delaware Superior Court.

Over the course of her judicial career, Jurden has overseen the Mental Health Court of the Delaware Superior Court since 2008. She has also supervised the Conflict Attorney Program, which provides representation to indigent defendants.

Jurden earned a B.A. from Muhlenberg College in 1985. She then completed a J.D. at Dickinson School of Law in 1988. As a law student, Jurden served as an articles editor for the Law Review as well as a member of the Woolsack Honor Society.

After graduating from law school, Jurden began her legal career as an associate at Young, Conaway, Stargatt & Taylor. She served in that capacity for seven years, specializing in corporate, commercial, and personal injury matters. In 1996, she was named partner at the firm, a position she held until her appointment to the bench.

Her memberships have included the American Bar Association, the Delaware State Bar Association, and the National Association of Women Judges. She has also served as a member of the Advisory Committee on the Delaware Rules of Evidence as well as the Advisory Committee on Professionalism.

Jurden is a recipient of the Outstanding Service to the Courts and Bar Award (2011) from the Delaware State Bar Association and the Sylvia H. Rambo Award (2009) from the Women’s Law Caucus of the Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law.

Born and raised in Delaware, Jurden attended Brandywine High School. She then joined the United States Army, where she served as secretary to the commander of the 3/7 Air Defense Artillery and the 69th Air Defense Artillery Group. She was honorably discharged in 1982.
