Judge Janet M. Boes - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Janet M. Boes is a judge for the Tenth Circuit Court of Michigan in Saginaw County. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jennifer Granholm on August 22, 2008, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Lynda L. Heathscott (Ret.).

During her judicial tenure, Boes has presided over the Drug Treatment Court in Saginaw County. She is credited with being involved in the formation and development of the court since its inception in 2012.

Prior to her appointment, Boes worked as an assistant prosecuting attorney with the Saginaw County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Before that, she was an associate at Braun Kendrick Finkbeiner, P.L.C.

Boes received a B.A. in sociology from the University of Toledo in 1975. She went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Toledo College of Law in 1983. She was admitted to practice in Ohio (1983) and Michigan (1985).

Her memberships have included the Women Lawyers Association. Boes has annually attended the Michigan Association of Treatment Court Professionals and contributes articles about the Drug Treatment Court operations in The SUMMONS.

From a civic standpoint, she has been involved with the Rotary Club of Saginaw, the Women in Leadership, and the One Hundred Club.

Boes is the recipient of the Special Hero Award from the Saginaw County Community Health Authority (2015), the Edward J. McArdle Memorial Tribute Award from the Saint Thomas More Society (2014), and the Elizabeth Heywood Wyman Award for Community Service from Alpha Omicron Pi (2009). She was also named an Advocates for Change Honoree by the Underground Railroad of Saginaw County.

Boes is a native of Toledo, Ohio. She attended Central Catholic High School. At the time of her appointment, Boes resided in Saginaw Township with her husband, John Sweeney, a shipping clerk specialist for Dow Chemical Co. The couple has two daughters.
