Judge Jeffrey C. Keal - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Jeffrey C. Keal is an associate judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jay Nixon on November 5, 2013, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Vernon E. Scoville, III.

Prior to his appointment, Keal was an assistant prosecuting attorney in the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, a position to which he was named in 1991. During his tenure there, he held assignments as a Trial Team Leader, managing the Criminal Traffic Unit and prosecuting white collar and property crimes.

Keal earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1983. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 1986. As a law student, he clerked at McDowell, Ric & Smith.

After graduating from law school, Keal entered into private practice as a sole practitioner in Independence. He worked in that capacity until 1988, at which time he joined Crews, Smart, Whitehead & Waits.

His memberships have included the Missouri Bar Association, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, the Association for Women Lawyers, and the Eastern Jackson County Bar Association. He has also been involved with the Blue Springs Booster Club, the Firefighters Local Number 42, and the Kansas City Curling Club.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Keal was raised in Independence, where he graduated from Van Horn High School. He has attended Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church and Calvary Presbyterian Church. When not handling legal matters, he has coached youth sports, including softball, basketball, and baseball in Kansas City, Independence, and Blue Springs.
