Judge Joan Anthony - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Joan Anthony is a judge for the 7th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. She was elected to the bench in 2020.

The 7th Judicial Circuit encompasses Flagler County, Putnam County, St. Johns County, and Volusia County. She has held assignments in Volusia County, presiding over cases in the unified family court.

Prior to her election, Anthony was an attorney in private practice, a law firm she opened in 2004. Before that, she spent time as legal counsel for the Volusia County metropolitan Planning Organization and a pre-law instructor at Bethune-Cookman College.

Anthony earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Bethune-Cookman University in 1981. She then completed a J.D. at Howard University School of Law. She was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1988.

Her memberships have included the Volusia County Bar Association and the Daytona Beach Kiwanis Club.

Anthony was born and raised in Jamaica. She would remain on the island with her mother while her father traveled to Belle Glade in Palm Beach County to cut sugar cane. In 1971, the family eventually moved to the United States, where Anthony attended Glades Central High School.
