Biography

The Hon. John B. Van de North (Ret.) served as a judge for the 2nd Judicial District Court of Minnesota. Van de North was appointed to the bench in 1998. He retired in 2015 and became a partner at Larson King.


Van de North chaired the Civil Division and the Family/Juvenile Division of the 2nd Judicial District Court. He also sat as the Lead Judge for Minnesota Asbestos Litigation, and he presided over the Ramsey County Juvenile Substance Abuse Court. Over the course of his judicial career, Van de North gained national attention after presiding over the highly-publicized clergy sex abuse cases in Minnesota.


Prior to his appointment, Van de North was a partner at Briggs & Morgan, a law firm he joined in 1989. Before that, he was an attorney at Holmes & Graven (1975 to 1977).


Van de North earned a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University in 1967. He then completed a J.D. at Notre Dame Law School in 1970. He has been admitted to practice in Minnesota, the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.


After graduating from law school, Van de North began his legal career as a special assistant attorney general for the Minnesota Office of the Attorney General. He served in that capacity until 1975, holding assignments with the Department of Revenue, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. During this time, he supplemented his practice with service in the United States Army.


His memberships have included the Minnesota State Bar Association and the Ramsey County Bar Association.


He was named Best Trial Judge by the American Board of Trial Advocates (2014). He is also a recipient of the Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award from the Ramsey County Bar Association (2011).
