Judge John J. Toomey, Jr.: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Hon. John J. Toomey, Jr. is a judge for the Suffolk County Court in the Tenth Judicial District of New York. He was elected to the County Court in 2011.

Previously, he served as a judge for the Suffolk County District Court, a position to which he was elected in 2003. Toomey was retained to the position in subsequent elections. While on the District Court, he presided on the Suffolk County Veterans Court and served as an acting Surrogate’s Court judge.

Toomey received a B.A. from Stoneybrook University in 1972. He also completed a J.D. at Hamline University School of Law in 1976.

After law school, Toomey became an assistant town attorney for the Town of Smithtown (1976 to 1979) while also working as a private practice attorney (1976 to 2003). Later, he served as a special prosecutor for the Town of Smithtown (1983).

Toomey was a member of the Tenth Judicial Grievance Committee from 1995 to 2002.

Active in his community, he was a member of the St. James Fire Department and also served as the grand marshall of the St. James St. Patrick’s Day parade. He has also served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army and is a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Toomey, who moved to St. James when he was eight years old, is of Irish descent. His grandparents were born in Ireland and later moved to New York.
