Judge John M.T. Chavis, II: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Hon. John M.T. Chavis, II is a judge for the Marion County Superior Court in Indiana. He was elected to the bench in 2012.

Chavis has served as Presiding Judge (2015 to 2016) of the Marion County Superior Court and was Associate Presiding Judge of the court’s Executive Committee and a member of the Family Operations Subcommittee. He has held an assignment in the Civil Division and is credited with redrafting the court’s local rules.

Prior to his election, Chavis worked as a private practice attorney.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Lincoln University. Chavis went on to complete a J.D. at Florida State University College of Law in 1993.

He was admitted to practice in Indiana (1994), the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.
