Judge John W. Grow: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. John W. Grow (Ret.) was a justice for the Oneida County Supreme Court in the Fifth Judicial District of New York. He joined the Supreme Court in 1983 and retired in 2009.

Prior to joining the bench, Grow practiced as a founding partner at McMahon & Grow, LLC. In addition to his law practice, he also served as a corporation counsel for the City of Rome. Upon his retirement from the bench, Grow returned to his practice at his former law firm. He also served as a judicial hearing officer for the New York State Unified Court System.

Grow received a bachelor’s degree from St. Lawrence University. He went on to earn a J.D. from Cornell Law School.

His memberships included the New York State Bar Foundation (Fellow), the New York State Bar Association, the Oneida County Bar Association, the Herbert Dyett Fund of the Rome Community Foundation (past-president), and the Rome Bar Association.

Grow also held memberships with the Red Cross, Rome United Way, Salvation Army of Rome, Jervis Library, Rome Area Chamber of Commerce, and the YMCA.

He served as an officer in the U.S. Army and continued his service in the Reserve Corps.
