Judge Juliana Maugeri - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Juliana Maugeri is a court attorney referee for the Dutchess County Supreme Court in the Ninth Judicial District of New York.

During her tenure in that position, Maugeri has held an assignment in the Foreclosure Part since January 2010.

Before that, she worked as a principal court attorney (2001 to 2008) to the Hon. George D. Marlow, former Appellate Division, First Department Associate Justice, until she became counsel to Justice Marlow during his tenure as Statewide Judicial Director of Ethics Education and Counsel. During that same time, Maugeri continued to work as his principal court attorney after following him to the Dutchess County Supreme Court. She held both positions until December 2009.

Maugeri received a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1978. She then worked as a paralegal in the Litigation Bureau of the Office of the Attorney General for the State of New York until completing her J.D. at Brooklyn Law School in 1986. While in law school, Maugeri received the Stephen Jay Penzick Memorial Award for her high marks in the Administrative Law course.

After law school, she worked as a law clerk in the New York City Criminal Court until becoming a confidential law secretary to the Hon. Karla Moskowitz, a former acting New York Supreme Court justice.

Subsequently, Maugeri worked as a staff attorney with the Criminal Appeals Bureau of the New York City Legal Aid Society before relocating to Dutchess County to work as an associate in the Poughkeepsie law firm of Van DeWater & Van DeWater, where she specialized in media law, civil rights, and commercial litigation. Maugeri remained with the firm for seven years.

After leaving the firm, she returned to the Unified Court System, this time as a principal court attorney in the Law Department of the Appellate Division, Second Department.

Her memberships have included the Mid-Hudson Chapter of the New York State Women’s Bar Association (past president) and the Dutchess County Bar Association.

Maugeri also sat as a member of the Law Guardian Advisory Committee for the Ninth Judicial District.
