Judge Kalimah H. Ahmad - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Kalimah H. Ahmad is a judge for the Hudson County Superior Court (Vicinage 6) in New Jersey. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Phil Murphy on December 17, 2020.

Ahmad earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Montclair State University in 1998. She financed her studies by working as a youth opportunities coordinator for the Jersey City Housing Authority (1993 to 1999) and a client associate for Merrill Lynch (1994 to 2001). Then, in 2005, she completed a J.D. at Seton Hall Law School. As a law student, Ahmad interned for the Hon. Shirley Tolentino of the New Jersey Superior Court (2003 to 2004).

After graduating from law school, Ahmad entered into private practice, handling education, criminal, workers compensation, personal injury, divorce, and entertainment matters as an associate at Hunt, Hamlin & Ridley. During her tenure there, she served as the redevelopment attorney on major low-income housing projects. Then, in 2009, she opened her own private practice as a sole practitioner. She specialized in civil rights, employment, entertainment, sports, redevelopment, workers compensation, and criminal law matters.

Ahmad supplemented her practice with service as assistant county counsel for the Office of the Hudson County Counsel (2009 to 2012), where she represented the county in all aspects of the law. She also served as legal advisor to the Hudson County Department of Corrections (2012 to 2020) and Chief of Staff to the Chairman of the Hudson County Freeholders Board.

Her memberships have included the Garden State Bar Association (regional director). She also sat on the Board of Trustees for the Educational Arts Team.

She is a recipient of the Young Lawyer Award from the Garden State Bar Association.

Raised in Jersey City, Ahmad attended James J. Ferris High School. In 2009, she trained for a cure to benefit the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and competed in the Franklin Lakes New Jersey Triathlon.
