Biography

Hon. Karen Held Phipps is a judge for the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas (General Division) in Ohio. She was elected to the bench on November 6, 2018.

Held Phipps received a B.A. in business finance from Capital University in 2000. She went on to complete a J.D. at Capital University Law School in 2003.

While in law school, she worked as a law clerk in the law firm of Clark, Perdue, Roberts & Scott and briefly practiced as an attorney there after graduating.

Held Phipps then opened her own solo practice, the Law Office of Karen Held Phipps, LLC, in 2005. During her fourteen-year tenure in that position, she handled criminal and traffic defense matters including OVI charges. She also appeared almost daily in the Common Pleas and Municipal Courts, and her trial experience ranged from misdemeanors to murders.

Her memberships have included the Columbus Bar Association, the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Women Lawyers of Franklin County.

At the time of her election, Held Phipps resided in Hilliard.
