Judge Katherine Lucero - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Katherine Lucero is a judge for the Superior Court of Santa Clara County in California. She was appointed to the bench by former governor Gray Davis in 2001, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. John Pasco.

Lucero earned a B.A. in political science and public service from the University of California, Davis in 1986. She then completed a J.D. at Syracuse University, College of Law in 1989.

She began her legal career as a deputy district attorney in the Office of the District Attorney of Santa Clara County in 1990. Over the course of her tenure there, she specialized in crimes against children and the elderly.

Just prior to her appointment to the bench, she was selected to serve as a court commissioner for the Superior Court of Santa Clara County. In that capacity, she handled juvenile dependency cases that involved abused and neglected children.

During her tenure on the bench, Lucero has supervised the Juvenile Drug Treatment Court. She started a Family Treatment Court, which was designed to assist parents with substance abuse problems. She also initiated a series of meetings to promote gender-specific programming throughout the Juvenile Justice System.

She has served as president of the Santa Clara La Raza Lawyers Association. She has also co-chaired the Santa Clara County Greenbook’s Cultural Competency Initiative.

Her memberships have included the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the Girl Scouts of America, the Santa Clara County Domestic Violence Council, the Santa Clara Child Abuse Council, and the California Latino Judges Association.

She is a recipient of the Portraits of Success Award from the Hispanic Development Corporation, the Leonard Edwards Champion of Peace Award from the Santa Clara County Domestic Violence Council, the Vision Award from the Pro Bono Project of Silicon Valley, the 100 Freedom Fighter Award from the NAACP, and the Unsung Hero Award from the Santa Clara County Bar Association.

Lucero was the first Latina judge appointed to the Superior Court of Santa Clara County.
