Biography

The Hon. Kathleen E. Coffey is First Justice of the West Roxbury Division of the Boston Municipal Court in Massachusetts. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Bill Weld in 1993.


Coffey earned a bachelor’s degree in American studies from Newton College of the Sacred Heart in 1975. She then completed a J.D. at Boston College Law School in 1978.


After graduating from law school, Coffey began her legal career as an assistant district attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. She served in that capacity until 1983, at which time she entered into private practice. Coffey spent the next ten years working as an attorney at Brogna & Butters (1985 to 1988) and the Parkway Law Offices (1988 to 1993).


She has taught Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, and Trial Practice at the Suffolk University Law School.


Her memberships have included the West Roxbury Chapter of Boston Against Drugs (co-chair), the YMCA West Roxbury-Roslindale Branch (director), the West Roxbury Neighborhood Council (treasurer), and the Youville Hospital Chairman’s Council. She also sat on the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts Osteopathic Hospital.


Coffey was born in Teaneck, New Jersey. When not presiding over legal matters, Coffey enjoys running, swimming, and reading. She has volunteered as a coach for Parkway Youth Soccer and the Roche Community Center.
