Judge Kelly W. Case - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Kelly W. Case (Ret.) was a judge for the 9th District Court of Texas in Montgomery County. He was elected to the bench on November 6, 2012. Case retired on June 16, 2016.

Prior to his election, he worked as a private practice attorney since 1994. Before that, Case was a prosecutor with the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office, where he began his legal career.

Case was board certified in Criminal Law by the State Bar of Texas and is one of sixty attorneys in the United States accredited by Axion Laboratories in Gas Chromatography. He was also Death Capital Certified by the 2nd Administrative Region.

Case received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Louisiana State University in 1986. He went on to complete a J.D. at Tulane Law School in 1991. While a law student, Case was a member of the Environmental Law Journal.

He is admitted to practice in Texas, the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of Texas.

His memberships include the American Chemical Society and the American Academy of Forensic Scientists. Case served on the Criminal Justice Act Panel for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

Following his retirement from the bench, he returned to private practice at Case Law, PLLC (2016 to 2018) until becoming a canine handler for Alpha Team K9 Search and Rescue in Georgia in 2019, where he remained for one year. Case also practiced as a senior attorney at Meriwether & Tharp, LLC in Georgia (2019 to 2022) before returning to Texas to join The Beal Law Firm as a senior trial attorney in 2021. In addition to his practice, he is a canine handler for canine, Coco, with Mark9 SAR, and is certified by the American Working Dog Association.

Case attended Acadiana High School. He and his wife, Susan, have four children.
