Judge Kimberley S. Knowles - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Kimberley S. Knowles is an associate judge for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. She was nominated by former President Barack Obama in 2012. Knowles was confirmed by the United States Senate on August 2, 2012.

She has served as the Presiding Judge of the Domestic Violence Division. Knowles began her judicial career as a magistrate for the Superior Court, a position to which she was appointed by former Chief Judge Lee F. Satterfield in 2010.

Prior to joining the bench, Knowles was Deputy Chief of the Sex Offense/Domestic Violence Section at the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia since 2004. She joined the office as an Assistant United States Attorney following her judicial clerkship and went on to hold assignments in the Appellate, General Felony, Community Prosecution and Major Crimes, and Fraud and Public Corruption Sections.

Knowles received a B.A. from Cornell University in 1992. She then completed a J.D. at Howard University School of Law in 1996.

After graduating from law school, Knowles began her legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Eric T. Washington with the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

She was born and raised in the Bronx, New York.
