Biography

The Hon. LaTisha Dear Jackson is a judge for the DeKalb County Superior Court in Georgia. She was elected to the bench on July 24, 2018.

Dear Jackson has held assignments as the Presiding Judge of the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit’s Accountability Courts. These courts assist nonviolent offenders by addressing the risk factors that lead to frequent and persistent incarceration, with specific programming for veterans, individuals suffering from addiction, and the mentally ill.

Prior to her appointment, Dear Jackson served as an associate judge for the DeKalb County Recorder’s Court (2014 to 2015), associate judge for the City of Stone Mountain Municipal Court (2008 to 2018), Chief Judge of the City of Lithonia Municipal Court (2012 to 2014), and pro hac vice judge for the DeKalb County Recorder’s Court (2007 to 2011).

Dear Jackson earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, management organization, and writing from Spelman College in 1998. She then completed a J.D. at Georgia State University College of Law in 2001. She is admitted to practice in Georgia, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, and the United States Supreme Court.

After graduating from law school, Dear Jackson began her legal career as an assistant solicitor general for the DeKalb County Solicitor General’s Office. She served in that capacity until 2002, at which time she entered into private practice.

She started as a sole practitioner in her own practice, specializing in juvenile law, criminal defense, and family law matters. Then, in 2015, she became a senior associate at Thomas Kennedy Sampson & Tompkins in Atlanta. Thomas Kennedy Sampson & Tompkins is the oldest minority-owned law firm in the State of Georgia. During her tenure there, she sat in the litigation department, defending corporate clients in medical malpractice, wrongful death, premises liability, and insurance matters.

Her memberships have included the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, the Georgia Association of Women Attorneys, the DeKalb County Bar Association, the Gate City Bar Association, and the DeKalb Lawyers Association. She sat on the Georgia Supreme Court’s Committee on Fairness, Access and Public Trust and its Public Confidence Committee as well as the Board of Directors for the Georgia Center for Children.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Dear Jackson is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She and her husband, Gari B. Jackson, attend Ray of Hope Christian Church.
