Judge Laura A. Cordero - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Laura A. Cordero is an associate judge for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. She was nominated to the bench by former President George W. Bush in 2004 and 2005. Cordero was confirmed by the United States Senate on June 24, 2005.

She has served as Presiding Judge of the Probate and Tax Division, Presiding and Deputy Presiding Judge of the Civil Division, and Presiding Judge of the Domestic Violence Unit.

Prior to her nomination, Cordero was the Executive Assistant United States Attorney for External Affairs with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. After joining the office as an assistant United States attorney in 1993, she prosecuted criminal cases in Superior Court, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, and the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In 1999, Cordero received an assignment as the first Community Prosecutor at the Metropolitan Police Department Third District, as part of the office's citywide Community Prosecution Program.

Before her time as a federal prosecutor, she spent two years as a law clerk to the Hon. James A. Parker with the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico (1988 to 1990). Following her clerkship, Cordero was assigned in 1991 to serve as a trial attorney in the Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division under the Department of Justice’s Attorney General’s Honor Law Graduate Program.

She received a B.A. in political science and mathematics from DePaul University in 1985. Cordero then completed a J.D. at Harvard Law School in 1988. While a law student, she represented indigent clients as a student attorney at the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau.

Cordero was an English tutor for Spanish-speaking victims of domestic violence and a tutor for students at Amidon Elementary School. She also taught as a faculty member at Harvard Law School’s Trial Advocacy Workshop.

Cordero was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.
