Biography

The Hon. Laura B. Smith is a judge for the Domestic Relations Division of the Fairfield County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Kasich on July 27, 2011, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Kathy S. Mowry.

Prior to her appointment, Smith was a magistrate for the Fairfield County Domestic Relations Court, a position to which she was selected in 1997. She presided over divorce and domestic trials, holding hearings related to custody matters, restraining orders, discovery disputes, and pretrial conferences. Before that, Smith sat as a magistrate for the Hocking County Court of Common Pleas (1997) and the Hocking County Juvenile Court (1996 to 1997).

Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and public administration from Capital University. She then completed a J.D. at the Ohio State University, Michael E. Moritz College of Law.

After graduating from law school, Smith entered into private practice, where she represented individuals in family law cases.

Her memberships have included the Ohio State Bar Association, the Ohio Association of Magistrates, and the Fairfield County Bar Association.

A resident of Bremen, Ohio, Smith is married with two children.

She is registered as a Republican.
