Judge Laura C. Inveen - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Laura C. Inveen (Ret.) served as a judge for the King County Superior Court in Washington. Inveen was appointed to the bench by former Governor Booth Gardner in 1992. She retired in 2019 and joined Hilyer Dispute Resolution as a private mediator and arbitrator.

Over the course of her judicial career, Inveen held assignments as the Presiding Judge of the court as well as the Chief Judge of the Civil Department and the Juvenile Department. She also sat as a judge for the King County District Court, a position to which she was named in 1988.

Inveen earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from the University of Puget Sound in 1976. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Washington School of Law in 1979.

After graduating from law school, Inveen began her legal career as a staff attorney with the Eastside Public Defenders Association. She worked in that capacity until 1982, at which time she entered into private practice as an attorney at Ogden Murphy and Wallace (1982 to 1988). During her tenure there, she specialized in municipal law and civil litigation, spending the last year of her career as the Town Attorney for the Town of Clyde Hill (1987 to 1988).

Her memberships have included the Washington State Superior Court Judges Association (president) and Washington Women Lawyers (president). She also sat on the Advisory Committee for the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice.

She was a recipient of the Outstanding Judge Award from the Washington State Bar Association (2013) as well as the President’s Award (2014) and the Vanguard Award (2006) from Washington Women Lawyers.

When not presiding over legal matters, Inveen enjoys training for triathlons and traveling with her family.
