Judge LeRoy A. Simmons - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. LeRoy A. Simmons (Ret.) served as a judge for the San Bernardino County Superior Court in California. Simmons was initially elected to the San Bernardino Municipal Court in 1976. He was subsequently elevated to the Superior Court by former Governor Jerry Brown in 1981. He retired in 1994 and joined the Assigned Judges Program.

Over the course of his judicial career, Simmons acquired national attention as the judge who presided over the Anderson v. PG&E case. This case was the basis for the movie “Erin Brockovich.” He portrayed himself in the film.

Prior to his election, Simmons worked as an attorney in private practice, handling personal injury, family law, and criminal matters. Before that, he served as a deputy district attorney for the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.

Simmons earned a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in 1964. He then completed a J.D. at the University of San Francisco School of Law.

His memberships have included the San Bernardino County Planning Commission as well as the Board of Directors of the San Bernardino County Law Library, the San Bernardino County Legal Aid Society, and the San Bernardino County Bar Association. He also sat as President of the Board of Trustees of Barstow Community College.

Simmons has been actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America. He served as Mojave District Chairman, Vice President of Inland Empire Council, and Eagle Chairman for Mojave District.
