Judge Lisa M. Rau - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Lisa M. Rau (Ret.) served as a judge for the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. Rau was appointed to the bench by former Governor Tom Ridge in 2001. She retired in 2019 and founded Resonate Mediation and Arbitration.

Over the course of her judicial career, Rau sat on the National Center for State Courts Civil Study Review Committee, the Judicial Education Committee, the Civil Rules Committee, the Landlord Tenant Liaison Committee, and the Landlord Tenant Appellate Mediation Program. She also co-founded MENTOR, a reentry court that links volunteer citizen mentors with recently convicted criminal defendants.

Rau earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Colgate University in 1981. She spent the next several years as a Nutrition Extension Worker in Thailand with the United States Peace Corps. Then, in 1987, she completed a J.D. at Stanford Law School. She is certified in Judicial Development and General Jurisdiction Trial Skills and Dispute Resolution Skills by the National Judicial College.

After graduating from law school, Rau began her legal career as an attorney for the Public Interest Law Center. She worked in that capacity until 1995, at which time she joined Kairys Rudovsky Epstein. During her tenure there, she specialized in complex employment and class action cases in federal court, quickly rising through the ranks to become a partner in 1997.

Her memberships have included the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the American College of Business Court Judges, and the Temple Inn of Court.

A military brat, Rau was born in Massachusetts and lived in Afghanistan, Washington, D.C., Minnesota, California, and Nebraska.
