Judge Lisa P. Thornton - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Lisa P. Thornton is the assignment judge for the Vicinage 9 Superior Court in Monmouth County in New Jersey. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jon Corzine in 2008 and reappointed for tenure in 2015.

Thornton was appointed the assignment judge for the Monmouth Vicinage in 2014 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Lawrence M. Lawson (Ret.), becoming the first female African-American to hold the position in New Jersey.

At the time of her appointment, she was the presiding judge in the Family Division in Monmouth County. As such, Thornton was credited with developing a Law Clerk Bootcamp for recent law school graduates. She also held assignments in the Criminal and Civil Divisions.

Prior to joining the bench, Thornton was chief of staff of the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, a position she assumed in 2006.

She received a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University in 1986. After graduating from university, Thornton joined Prudential Financial, where she worked while pursuing her law degree. She went on to complete a J.D. at Rutgers Law School in 1992.

Thornton remained at Prudential Financial after graduating from law school, eventually rising through the ranks to senior trial attorney. During her tenure there, she also presided as a judge in the Neptune Township Municipal Court (1999 to 2001).

Then, in 2002, Thornton was named special deputy commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance, remaining in that capacity until becoming senior associate counsel for then-Governor Corzine in the Office of the New Jersey Governor in 2006, though her time there would be brief. Later that same year, Thornton joined the Attorney General’s Office as its chief of staff.

She has sat as a member of the Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Extrajudicial Activities. Thornton also served in the Rutgers Law School Diversity Pipeline Program, which encourages minority students to develop skills that could translate to future judicial positions.

At the time of her appointment to assignment judge, Thornton resided in Neptune Township.
