Judge Margaret O. Steinbeck - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Margaret O. Steinbeck is a judge for the 20th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Lawton Chiles in 1998.

The 20th Judicial Circuit encompasses Charlotte County, Collier County, Glades County, Hendry County, and Lee County.

Prior to her appointment, Steinbeck was an assistant United States attorney with the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida, a position to which she was named in 1995. Before that, she spent time as a civil litigation attorney at Steptoe & Johnson in Washington, D.C., and Cheffy, Passidomo & Steinbeck in Naples, Florida.

Steinbeck received a B.S. in education from the University of Georgia in 1978. She was a distinguished military graduate of the Army ROTC program, commissioned as a second lieutenant (Regular Army) for the Army Adjutant General’s Corps. Steinbeck went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Virginia School of Law (1984) and an LL.M. from the Army Judge Advocate General’s School (now The Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School) in Charlottesville, Virginia (1989).

She was admitted to practice in Virginia (1984), the United States Supreme Court (1989), Florida (1991), the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, and the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida (1992).

After graduating from law school, Steinbeck served on active duty as an officer for the United States Army's Judge Advocate General's Corps (1984 to 1990). Over the course of her military career, she held assignments as a criminal prosecutor in Germany and as an environmental litigation attorney in Washington, D.C. Upon completing active duty, Steinbeck continued to serve in the Army Reserve until retiring as a lieutenant colonel. In the Reserve, she served in the Army’s Litigation Division, the 174th Legal Support Organization, and at the Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School.

Steinbeck sat as chair of the Florida Trial Court Budget Commission and the Executive Committee of the Florida Conference of Circuit Judges. In addition, she is co-author of the “Florida Evidence Code Trial Book” and has taught as a faculty member of the Florida Judicial College and the Florida College of Advanced Judicial Studies, where her subjects have included trial skills and evidence.

Born in Ames, Iowa, she is married to the Hon. Mark A. Steinbeck (Ret.), a retired judge of the 20th Judicial Circuit Court (2006 to 2014). The couple has four grown children and eight grandchildren.
