Biography

The Hon. Marlene Lynch Ford is a judge for the Ocean County Superior Court (Vicinage 14) in New Jersey. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Chris Christie on June 15, 2015, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Vincent J. Grasso.

Ford began her judicial career as a judge for the Ocean County Superior Court in 1992. She was appointed to the post by former Governor James Floria, holding assignments in the Family Division (1992 to 1996, 2006 to 2007), the Civil Division (1996 to 2001, 2002 to 2006), and the Criminal Division (2001 to 2002).

Then, in 2007, Ford was selected to serve as the Prosecutor for Ocean County by former Governor Jon Corzine. She served in that capacity until 2013, at which time she joined the Family Division of the Burlington County Superior Court. Ford spent two years in Burlington before returning to the Ocean County Superior Court in 2015.

Ford earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Georgian Court University in 1976. She then completed a J.D. at Seton Hall Law School in 1979. She was admitted to practice in New Jersey and the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.

After graduating from law school, Ford entered into private practice in Jackson Township and Point Pleasant Beach. During this time, she was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly, where she represented the 10th Legislative District (1984 to 1986, 1990 to 1992). She also spent time as general counsel to the New Jersey General Assembly Democratic Delegation (1988 to 1990) and H. Hovnanian Industries, a large-scale residential and commercial real estate developer.

As a member of the New Jersey General Assembly, Ford sponsored over 75 bills that were signed into law. These include the Domestic Violence Prevention Act (1990) and the Victims Rights Amendment to the New Jersey Constitution. She also helped enhance penalties for parental kidnapping, institute the largest tax reduction in New Jersey history, extend civil rights to include sexual orientation, and ban assault weapons.

Ford was born in Yuma, Arizona, where her parents worked as farmers. The family eventually relocated to Belmar, New Jersey, and Ford attended St. Rose High School. She currently resides in Toms River with her husband, Dr. Frank Kelly, and her daughter.

She is registered as a Democrat.
