Judge Mary Beth Shank - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Mary Beth Shank is a judge for the Franklin-Fulton County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. She was elected to the bench on November 5, 2019, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Carol Van Horn.

Shank earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Grove City College in 2000. She then completed a J.D. at Penn State Dickinson Law in 2004.

After graduating from law school, Shank entered into private practice in Chambersburg, handling estate planning, landlord-tenant, family law, and business matters. She started as an associate at LopezNeuharth before becoming a partner at Sharpe & Sharpe in 2006. Shank worked in that capacity until 2016, at which time she became a principal at Salzmann Hughes.

During her tenure in private practice, Shank also served as Assistant County Solicitor (2006 to 2009) and County Solicitor (2010 to 2019) for the Franklin County Solicitor’s Office. In those roles, she provided legal representation to the Board of Commissioners and all county departments and agencies. Shank has also spent time as special counsel for the Adams County Board of Assessment, solicitor for the Waynesboro Planning Commission, assistant solicitor for the Borough of Chambersburg, and assistant solicitor for the Borough of Waynesboro.

Her memberships have included the Franklin County Bar Association (president) as well as the Franklin County Orphans Court Committee. She also sat on the Board of Directors of Cumberland Valley School of Music, Downtown Chambersburg, Chambersburg Head Start, Shook Home & Rehabilitation Center, Totem Pole Playhouse, and Keystone Rural Health Center.

The daughter of a former tax collector, Shank was raised in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, where she attended Chambersburg Area Senior High School. She is a member of the First United Methodist Church.
