Biography

Hon. Mary E. Montgomery is a judge for the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas (General Division) in Ohio. She was elected to the bench in November 2018.

During her tenure on the Court of Common Pleas, Montgomery has served on the court’s Case Management Committee and Technology Committee.

She received a B.A. in political science from Ohio University in1994. Montgomery went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Dayton School of Law in 1998. She is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

After graduating from law school, she began her legal career as an assistant prosecuting attorney with the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office. During her over twenty-year tenure there, Montgomery held several assignments, including supervising attorney at Care House, where she was tasked with prosecuting felonies involving the physical and sexual abuse of children, and trial supervisor, training and managing trial attorneys on several judges’ criminal dockets. Then, in 2014, she was named chief of the Civil Division. In that position, Montgomery was responsible for supervising a staff of fifteen employees as well as representing the County, its elected officials, and departments and agencies in administrative matters and civil matters, including civil defense litigation. She remained with the Prosecutor’s Office until her election to the bench.

Montgomery has held memberships with the Dayton Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, the Dayton Lawyer’s Club, the Carl D. Kessler Inn of Court, and the Ohio Common Pleas Judges Association.

From a civic standpoint, Montgomery has been a team manager for the Oakwood United Soccer Club and a Girl Scout Troop leader.

She is married and has three children.

Montgomery is registered as a Democrat.
