Judge Matthew J. Donohue - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Matthew J. Donohue is a judge for the 21st Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon in Benton County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Kitzhaber in March 2013, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Janet Holcomb (deceased.).

Donohue presided over the Drug Treatment Court since 2019.

Prior to his appointment, he had worked as an assistant attorney general in the Trial Division of the Oregon Department of Justice in Salem since 2004. During that time, he defended state agencies in federal and state courts and also handled condemnation proceedings and administrative contested cases.

Donohue received a B.S. in natural resource management from Oregon State University in 1999. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Oregon School of Law.

Donohue was admitted to practice in Oregon in 2002.

After graduating from law school, he began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Rives Kistler with the Oregon Court of Appeals and the Oregon Supreme Court.

Raised on a family farm in New Hampshire, he relocated to Oregon in 1994. Donohue spent eight years as an elected member of the Corvallis School Board.

Donohue is affiliated with the Green Party.
