Judge Matthew Newman - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Matthew Newman (Ret.) served as a judge for the La Paz County Superior Court in Arizona. Newman was appointed to the bench by Governor Doug Ducey on May 2, 2017, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Samuel Vederman. He resigned from the bench on December 31, 2018.

Prior to his appointment, Newman was the owner of the Newman Law Center, a law firm he established in Parker in 1992. During his tenure there, he handled criminal defense, family law, juvenile law, and civil litigation matters. He also spent time as the Town Prosecutor for the Town of Quartzsite as well as a special prosecutor for the Colorado Indian Tribes.

Newman earned a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Fresno in 1977. He then completed a J.D. at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in 1985. As a law student, Newman grew asparagus and tomatoes in addition to driving a truck for a tree transplanting business.

After graduating from law school, Newman began his legal career as an attorney for the California State Senate. In that capacity, he provided legal assistance to the Subcommittee on Administration of Justice as well as the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Newman then joined the California Public Defender’s Office, where he served as Chief Deputy Public Defender and Chief Assistant Public Defender.

Newman moved to Parker, Arizona, in 1991. Over the course of his life, he has worked as a florist, a chemist, a burger flipper, a grape swamper, and a farmer.
