Biography

The Hon. Michael Newman (Ret.) served as a judge for the 14th Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Ted Kulongoski in 2003.


The 14th Judicial District encompasses Josephine County.


Prior to his appointment, Newman was a deputy district attorney for the Josephine County District Attorney’s Office, a position to which he was named in 1991. Before that, he spent time as an attorney at Harrang Long Watkinson Arnold & Laird, specializing in municipal law matters in Eugene (1990 to 1991).


Newman earned a bachelor’s degree in urban studies from Stanford University in 1975. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Oregon School of Law in 1981.


After graduating from law school, Newman began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. William Richardson of the Oregon Court of Appeals. He served in that capacity until 1983, at which time he entered into private practice at Petersen Barker & Newman in Corvallis. He spent the next three years handling criminal defense, domestic relations, consumer affairs, and real estate matters before joining the City of Corvallis as its deputy city attorney.


His memberships have included Grants Pass Urban Area Planning Commission, the Grants Pass Infrastructure Task Force, and the Josephine County Emergency Food & Shelter Board.


Raised in Denver, Colorado, Newman attended Abraham Lincoln High School.
