Judge Michael P. McDaniel - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Michael P. McDaniel is a judge for the 10th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Scott on June 24, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. J. Dale Durrance.

The 10th Judicial Circuit encompasses Hardee County, Highlands County, and Polk County. McDaniel has held assignments in Polk County, presiding over cases in the Felony Division and the Civil Division.

McDaniel earned a B.A. in anthropology from the University of South Florida in 1991. He then completed a J.D. at the Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad College of Law, in 1994.

After graduating from law school, McDaniel entered into private practice, working as an attorney at his father's law firm. He remained with the firm until 1995, at which time he opened the McDaniel Law Firm. McDaniel supplemented his practice with service as a magistrate for the Polk County Teen Court (1995 to 2003).

His memberships have included the Federalist Society, the Military Officers Association of America, and the Polk County Domestic Violence Task Force.

Born and raised in Polk County, McDaniel is a veteran of the United States Army. In 2005, he was deployed to Iraq, receiving an honorable discharge as a captain two years later. He also served as a senior rule of law advisor for the United States Department of State in Afghanistan, where he partnered with Afghan judges and lawyers to develop a new justice system in the country (2010 to 2013).
