Biography

Hon. Michael Stano (Ret.) was a special judge for the Payne County District Court (District 9) in Oklahoma. He joined the bench in 2004. Stano retired in 2012.

Prior to joining the bench, he was an assistant and associate professor of speech communication at Oklahoma State University (1977 to 1999) and worked for almost five years as an assistant district attorney in Payne County (1999 to 2004).

Stano received a B.A. in political science from the University of Nevada, Reno (1969); an M.A. in speech communication from the University of Colorado, Boulder (1970); and a Ph.D. in speech communication from the University of Minnesota (1977). He went on to complete a J.D. at Oklahoma City University School of Law in 1990.

Before beginning his legal career, Stano spent several years in academia. During that time, he served as an instructor and Director of Forensics in the Speech Department at Eastern New Mexico University (1969 to 1970); an instructor and Assistant Director of Forensics in the Speech Department at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (1970 to 1972); and a graduate assistant, assistant professor, and Associate Director of Forensics at Macalester College (1972 to 1977).

Following his retirement, Stano served as an assistant court clerk in the Payne County Clerk’s Office (2012 to 2014) and was the Executive Director of the Multi-Arts Center in Stillwater (2014 to 2015).

In his free time, he enjoys photography. Stano, whose photographs typically depict architecture, uses multiple exposures and x-rays to make the details of his subject matter pop. Two of his entries won the Oklahoma Bar Association’s art competition, and he has also appeared in several galleries.
