Biography

The Hon. Philip A. Grant is a judge for the 9th District Court of Texas in Montgomery County. Grant was appointed to the bench by Governor Greg Abbott on June 17, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Kelly Case.


Prior to his appointment, Grant served as a first assistant district attorney for the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office since 2009. During his tenure there, he was responsible for the day-to-day management of the Public Integrity Division and the Major Crimes Unit. Before that, he prosecuted child sexual abuse, public integrity, and civil litigation cases for the Office of the District Attorney in Williamson County and Harris County. He has also worked as an attorney in private practice, specializing in criminal defense matters.


Grant earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the Virginia Military Institute. Then, in 1996, he completed a J.D. at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law in 1996. He is Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.


His memberships have included the Texas Guardianship Certification Board, the Montgomery County Bar Association, Children’s Safe Harbor, and the Houston Athletic Association for the Disabled.


Grant was named Child Abuse Prosecutor of the Year (2007) by the Williamson County Children’s Advocacy Center and Child Protective Team.


A resident of Montgomery, Grant attends Restoration Church. He has seven children, three of which have been adopted.


He is registered as a Republican.
