Judge Richard A. Frye - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Richard A. Frye is a judge for the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas (General Division) in Ohio. He was elected to the bench in 2004 and re-elected in 2010 and 2016.

During his judicial tenure, Frye has served as the presiding judge for the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas. As such, he chaired the Judicial Advisory Board of the Franklin County Community Based Correctional Facility.

He received a B.A. in history from Wittenberg University in 1970. Frye went on to complete a J.D. at Ohio State University, Michael E. Moritz College of Law in 1973.

Prior to his election, he was a partner and trial attorney at the law firm of Chester, Willcox & Saxbe, LLP.

Frye held memberships with the Columbus Bar Foundation (officer) and the Columbus Legal Aid Society (past president). He is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and has served as a member of the ACTL Judicial Independence Committee, the American Board of Trial Advocates, and the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference (lifetime member).

He sat on the Civil Rules Committee of the Ohio Supreme Court’s Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure (chair), the Evidence Rules Committee (past chair), the Ohio Judicial Conference Civil Law and Procedure Committee, and the Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on Case Management. In addition, Frye was chair of the judge's committee responsible for overseeing the design and construction of the new Franklin County Courthouse.

He received the William K. Thomas Distinguished Jurist Award from the Ohio State University, Michael E. Moritz College of Law Alumni Society (2013), the Liberty Bell Award from the Columbus Bar Association (2012), and the Judge George Tyack Award from the Central Ohio Association for Justice (2009).

Frye is registered as a Democrat.
