Judge Robert A. Awsumb - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Robert A. Awsumb (Ret.) served as a judge for the 2nd Judicial District Court of Minnesota. Awsumb was appointed to the bench by former Governor Tim Pawlenty on October 3, 2005. He retired on May 6, 2022, and became a senior judge for the State of Minnesota.

Prior to his appointment, Awsumb was the chief manager of R. A. Awsumb & Associates, a law firm he established in 1998. Before that, he was a founding partner and attorney at Rambow & Awsumb (1991 to 1998).

Awsumb earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in 1982. He then completed a J.D. at William Mitchell College of Law in 1986. He is admitted to practice in Minnesota (1986) and the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota (1986).

After graduating from law school, Awsumb entered into private practice, where he specialized in civil and commercial litigation. He started as an associate at Rider, Bennett, Egan & Arundel in Minneapolis. He worked in that capacity until 1991.

His memberships have included the American Bar Association, the American Judicature Society, the Minnesota State Bar Association, the Ramsey County Bar Association, and the Hennepin County Bar Association. He sat on the Supreme Court of Minnesota’s Board of Legal Certification, and he has been involved with the Greater Twin Cities United Way, the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library, and Child Haven, Inc.

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Awsumb and his wife, Lisa, have one son.
