Judge Robert C. Olson - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Robert C. Olson is a judge for the Pinal County Superior Court in Arizona. He was first appointed to the bench by former Governor Janet Napolitano in 2007.

During his initial tenure on the Superior Court, Olson presided on the Civil and Probate Courts and spent his last five years as Presiding Judge of Pinal County (2009 to 2013). He retired from the bench in 2013, subsequently serving in several counties as a retired judge, as well as a judge pro tempore with the Arizona Court of Appeals, Division One. Then, in 2016, Olson returned to the Pinal County Superior Court as a full-time commissioner and remained in that capacity until receiving a reappointment to the bench by Governor Doug Ducey in September 2018. He also returned to his posts on the Civil and Probate benches and serves as a Billing Special Master in an administrative capacity.

Prior to joining the bench, Olson was the County Attorney for the Pinal County Attorney’s Office, a position to which he was appointed by the Pinal County Board of Supervisors in 1996. He was later elected to the position in 1996 and re-elected in 2000 and 2004. He first joined the office in 1990 and served as a criminal prosecutor there until his appointment six years later.

Olson received a B.S. in business administration (public accounting) from Elmhurst College in 1983. He then earned a certificate as a Certified Public Accountant from the University of Illinois. Olson went on to complete a J.D. at Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1988.

He received a gubernatorial appointment to serve as fund manager & chair of the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System in 2003, a pension system for police, firefighters, elected officials, judges, correction officers, and Arizona probation officers. Olson remained on the Board for seven years.

He also served on the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission (chair and commissioner), the Arizona Prosecuting Attorney’s Advisory Council (vice-chair and councilmember), the Arizona Democratic Party (treasurer), the Arizona Auto Theft Task Force (board member), and the National District Attorney’s Association (board member).

Olson was born and raised in Illinois.
