Judge Robert E. Olson - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Robert E. Olson is a judge for the Whatcom County Superior Court in Washington. He was appointed to the bench on August 8, 2018, filling a vacancy created by the passing of the Hon. Ira Uhrig (deceased).

Prior to his appointment, Olson spent eight years as an assistant attorney general for the Washington State Attorney General’s Office. He represented Child Protective Services and the Department of Licensing. He also represented the State of Washington before the Office of Administrative Hearings for foster care licensing, day care licensing, and adult family home licensing.

Before that, Olson was a senior deputy public defender for the Whatcom County Public Defender Office (2001 to 2010). He also spent time as an associate at Lester & Associates, representing individual clients in misdemeanor criminal charges (1999 to 2001).

Olson earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from Pacific Lutheran University in 1987. He spent the next several years as a captain in military intelligence for the United States Army and the Washington Army National Guard before completing a J.D. at Seattle University School of Law in 1995.

He is a founding member of the Center for Law, Diversity and Justice.
