Judge Robert L. Polifroni - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Robert L. Polifroni (Ret.) was a judge for the Vicinage 2 Superior Court in Bergen County in New Jersey. He was appointed to the bench in 2006 and reappointed for tenure in 2012. Polifroni retired on February 1, 2021.

While on the bench, he held an assignment in the Civil Division in Bergen County, where he also served as the presiding judge since 2011.

Polifroni received a B.A. from Iona College in 1975. He went on to complete a J.D. at Fordham University School of Law in 1978.

After graduating from law school, Polifroni began his legal career as a law secretary to the Hon. V. William DiBuono, former assignment judge of the Union County Superior Court (1978 to 1979).

Over the course of his legal career, he practiced as an attorney in the law firm of Conway, Reiseman, Bumgardner, Hurley & Kleinfeld (1997) and as a partner at Hardin, Kundla, McKeon, Poletto & Polifroni (1997 to 2005).

Prior to his judicial service, he had worked for one year as a special deputy commissioner in the Office of Life and Health with the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance (2005 to 2006).

Polifroni was designated by the New Jersey Supreme Court as a Certified Civil Trial Attorney (1986 to 2006). He also served as a Rule 1:40 Qualified Mediator.

Following his retirement from the bench, he joined Hardin Kundla McKeon & Poletto as of counsel. Polifroni has handled alternate dispute resolution and complementary dispute resolution matters at the firm.

His memberships have included the Bergen County Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar Association, the Justice Morris Pashman Inns of Court (past president 2006 to 2016), the New Jersey Judicial Council, the Conference of New Jersey Civil Presiding Judges (chair), and the New Jersey Supreme Court Civil Practice Committee.

Polifroni spent time as an instructor and lecturer for the New Jersey Judicial College, the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education, the Bergen County Bar Association, and the New Jersey Association for Justice.

He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey.
